In December 1999, the 54th session of the General Assembly of the United
Nations adopted Resolution 54/134 in which it declared November 25 the
International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
The origin of November 25 goes back to 1960, the year in which the three
Mirabal sisters were violently murdered in the Dominican Republic. In the
popular movement and feminist Dominican Republic historically these women
have symbolized the struggle and resistance. The sisters, also known as the
"butterfly unforgettable" became the best example of the crisis of violence
against women in Latin America.
Mexico is one of the countries worldwide, has joined the commemoration of
November 25th as a day of reflection and promote the elimination of this
scourge. Missing still many obstacles to overcome. Their prevention, care,
punishment and eradication, and is a constant struggle in the work of the
United World. Our country recognizes violence against women in all its forms,
as a public health problem, which we must eliminate, so that social
coexistence, either the couple or family is a harmonious and equitable
practice , which will enrich us as human beings, both men and women.
On the occasion of the International Day of No Violence Against Women, the
Mexican Postal Service, issued a postal stamp.
