Probably disappeared from the Mexican territory since 1937, the year in which they reported to the last reliable sighting of this bird in the area known as "La Encantada". In the Sierra San Pedro Martir, Baja California.

The condors are carrion birds, feed on carcasses of dead deer and other animals in the past include the pronghorn and moose, along the coast has been observed feeding on the remains of seals, whales and fish.

Historically, their distribution covered the Pacific coast, from Canada to Mexico and throughout the southern United States. Found evidence of the existence of the condor in the Pleistocene in the states of Florida and New York.
