Jaime Sabines was born in Tuxtla Gutierrez, Chiapas, on 25 March 1926: died in Mexico City on 19 March 1999. In 1945 he entered the Faculty of Medicine, a career that left three years later to join in 1949 at the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters at the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico (UNAM). His poetry collection was recorded on the Living Voice of Mexico, UNAM and translated into twelve languages. In 1993, the Chiapas government instituted the International Poetry Prize Jaime Sabines.
