" SIEGE OF CUAUTLA "
16 - SEPTEMBER - 2009
Between 19 February and on 2 May 1812, the insurgent
forces of José María Morelos resisted the siege of the royalist troops of
Brigadier Calleja in Cuautla in the south of the capital of New Spain. Very
difficult were the conditions of the besieged, without adequate weapons and
little food, just enough to not be defeated. In a famous letter, dated April
4, 1812, Morelos said to Calleja:
" To die for true religion and his country, but does not die infamous, but
die gloriously. You, who wants to die as Napoleon, pointing out theof other
way..."
