Higher education was introduced in Mexico in the
sixteenth century, when in 1551 by royal decree of Charles I of Spain
established the Royal University of Mexico, being the forerunner of the
National University of Mexico, in 2010, marks a century of existence its
national character.
After several years of chasing, Justo Sierra, minister of Education of Fine
Arts, won the May 26, 1910 that President Diaz publish the law setting up
the National University of Mexico. On 22 September the same year he made the
solemn opening ceremony Sierra On that occasion said that the institution
was established to meet the scientific requirements of the country, know the
origins and characteristics of the extensive and varied Mexican territory,
and its complex population. To achieve its mission focus Sierra pointed out
that all the intellectual energy of the country and the great pyramid
coronary national education. Itself as modern and secular agency would be
responsible for preparing the country's intellectual elite, but the benefits
of his work would reach the whole population, to attend to either the
formation of good professionals, in response to peace, health , wealth and
social decorum.
